CherylPiay: 5 Food to Boost Your Metabolism!
Monday, July 8, 2013 1:30 AM

Everyone knows that your metabolism slows with age. The older you get, the slower your metabolism rate is. Many of us are constantly on a “diet”, trying to lose weight. Sick of regular dieting? Try out some metabolism-boosting food instead!

1. Grapefruits

Craving for a snack in the middle of the day? Keep your hands off those chips and cookies. Cut a grapefruit and snack on this instead. Grapefruits are low in sugar and contain an antioxidant that has been proven in studies that reduces your insulin level, which ultimately promotes weight loss.

2. Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Besides the typical health benefits you hear about apples usually, apples also help boost your metabolism rate. Apples are low in calorie and high in fiber. To break down the fiber, your body has to burn calories. Apples also keep you full for a longer period of time, so you'll definitely eat less. This fruit gives you the best of both worlds; it burns calories and also boosts your metabolism rate.

3. Hot peppers

These make your meals spicier and we all know that most Singaporeans like their meals spicy. So why not take advantage of this fact and add chili, jalapeno or cayenne into your meals? It has been proven that adding hot peppers to your meal can help boost your metabolism rate by up to 25% for 3 hours after your meal!

4. Lean Protein

Did you know that digesting food actually takes energy? However that does not mean that you should eat more to burn more calories. Your body actually burns more calories whilst digesting protein than when digesting carbohydrates and fats. So, eat a few servings of lean protein like chicken, fish or tofu everyday and it might keep your metabolism going even after you are done with your meal.

5. Dark chocolate

Going on a diet doesn't mean you have to stay away from anything that is sweet. Craving for chocolate? Go for dark chocolate instead. It has been proven scientifically that eating dark chocolate can actually aid in weight loss! Our body produces cortisol, a type of stress hormone, which increases the sugars in your bloodstream and prompts your body to store fat. Dark chocolate can actually reduce the level of cortisol. Don't have too much of it though, only in moderate amounts!

While these food might help boost your metabolism rate, do not depend on them to lose weight. You have to have a healthy and balanced diet as well as exercise in order to achieve the body you want. Eat everything in a moderate amount and remember to always drink a sufficient amount of water!
