ShermaineNg: Tips for a Toned Summer Body
Monday, June 3, 2013 12:52 PM

Finally, it's SUMMER. Time to pull out your favorite bathing suit and head down to the nearest beach for a quick dip in the sea, or to get a healthy sun kiss skin tan. If you're anything like me, you would definitely be psyched about the June holidays.

Spring Breakers (2013)
However, my body shape is always getting in the way when it comes to parading the beach in my bikini. Yes, that big lump of fat hanging out isn't that much of a charmer. Here are some simple tips for a daily workout routine you could try, to keep that "little devil" away:

1. Creating a routine
First and foremost, I must have you know that a toned body DOESN'T come with a day's work. It actually takes commitment. Then again, not everyone of us has the time to do so. Therefore, the most essential step to keeping a toned body is coming up with your routine. Set a specific time of the day where you know you're definitely not going to be occupied - I think 10pm is the best. Each routine should take not more than 30 minutes, so don't worry about not having enough rest.

2. Sticking to the routine
It is VERY important to stick to your routine. I know we're only human, and can get lazy at times. Not forgetting the lady's or guy's night out. No matter what, do your best to stick to your routine. Do not give yourself any excuses, because a simple "I'll take a day's break" can ruin your path to a toned body.

3. Start small
Do not try to accomplish 1000 sit-ups at one time, it is really impossible. Break up your workouts into sets. Start with 15 in each set and work your way up. It's more effective this way, trust me. At the same time, it doesn't really feel like a chore because finishing up 3 sets of squats is so much easier than finishing 50 squats at a go.

4. Arms, legs, belly?
Focus on one or two body parts per day, unless you've been working out constantly. Why? Because you do not want to wake up the next morning feeling like someone just practiced an Exorcism on you the night before. Your muscles will tear from all the push-ups and jumping jacks, the least you could do to help yourself is not let all the muscles in your body tear and ache at the same time.

5. Rewarding yourself
After completing every routine, do not cheat yourself with a scoop of ice cream as a reward. Instead, look for fruits like apples, pears or even citrus fruits to help boost your metabolism. Go for steamed or boiled meat instead of deep fried, because you know how harmful the extra oil is to you.

6. Quenching your thirst
DO NOT go for isotonic (sports) drinks. It's probably the marketing strategy, but I really don't get why most of my peers around me have this misconception that isotonic drinks help you when working out. They don't. Firstly, these "energy" drinks are packed with a lot of salt, which makes you even more thirsty, and sugar which is definitely not what you need when you're planning to shed some extra weight. Instead, try some green tea that helps increase your metabolism.

Have a toned summer!
