Khairi: Things to do before graduating
Monday, June 10, 2013 1:18 AM
Graduation is around the corner or in-sight. Here are a couple of things you should do in no particular order, ranging from the practical to the hilarious. Enjoy!
1. Speak to a careers’ adviser
It may not be the most fun-filled thing you can do when graduation is in sight, but that's all the more reason you should. Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or don’t have a clue, career advisers can help you decide which university path to take or additional skills and knowledge you might need to get yourself a dream job.
2. Go on a road trip
Hit the road with your best friends and enjoy the journey as the big, wide world flies past your car window. Or if a long car rides make you queasy, why not take a train ride instead all the way into Malaysia and perhaps Thailand? Whatever, it's the journey that counts, the fun times travelling with your friends, than the destination itself. Although a good destination is a bonus!
3. Pull a senior prank
Obviously, it's not fun if it's illegal or too outrageous, but pulling off a smart, epic prank that leaves even your lecturers secretly impressed is what you should be aiming for. This might even be your last chance to work with the people you've been with for the last three years. Get the entire senior class involved and coordinate the most epic, creative prank in your school's history.
4. Trade addresses and contact information with friends
This is a no-brainer. Get a wide network as early as possible! Who knows, that classmate of yours might just be the next Donald Trump. At least now you have his direct contact info if you want to pitch to him some great business idea you have! Chat with your close friends and figure out how you can still stay in contact with each other even if you go your separate ways.
5. Have a massive pizza party
Food brings people together and what a better choice than pizza? Pool money together and order massive numbers of pizza with different flavours and invite the whole senior class to help themselves on the last day of school! Throw in a few veggie pizzas to ease that guilty feeling. It's still veggie, right?
6. Food marathon
Chances are, you're not coming back to school ever again after graduating. So why not have a food marathon? Make your way from one end of the school to another while eating from all the food courts and fast food outlets. That food court has many stalls that you want to eat from? Breaks are allowed. Oh, library cafes and food vending machines are included.
7. Learn something new quickly
It's your last chance to learn something actually useful! Go to the library or get online with your friends and teach yourself a new skill or a piece of craft. From origami to using internet-relay chat, the possibilities are endless. Soft skills are highly recommended! Alternatively, you can relearn your mother tongue language if you have abandoned it for three whole years. Whoops!
8. Get fit(ter)
The only time camwhoring is acceptable is during graduation. Go exercise, shed a few pounds or tone that flabby body if you have been neglecting your fitness for the sake of your final year projects. When your friends look at your graduation photos you had with them 20 years from now, do you want them to remember how out-of-shape you were? I hope not.
9. Sort your through your work
Compile whatever you have done from day one in school and pick out the works you have done that you can include in your portfolio. Don't throw away your work even if you don't feel like working in that particular area, it might be useful in showing off your diversity in skills. Unless you failed in that particular coursework. Then by all means, feel free to trash it, burn it, whatever satisfies you.
10. Confess
If you have had a crush on someone in school, are you going to keep it to yourself all the way past graduation? Gather some courage and tell that person how you feel about them! For all you know, that person might be interested in you too! Worst-case scenario, you're going to graduate soon so what is there to lose? Take that chance and you won't have to regret not doing something you wish you did!
Have a great graduation,
Khairi :)
