ShermaineNg: Things I wish I knew by the time I was 16

Secondary school days were one of the best I could ever experience as a growing kid. Everyone wore the same uniform, and there wasn't a need to compare who's clothes were nicer. There was no direct competition with anyone, but then again, there's a few things I wish I knew back then.
1. People come and go, even best friends
I cannot stress how much I wish I knew this back when I was still in school. It was a disaster in all. I remember those days where I tried so hard to make up with friends that were never ever worth my time. If you've had a friend that gossips to you, chances are, they gossip about you too. So, try not to get too attached to these people. For all you know, they will in time leave you - even if you thought you guys were best friends.
2. Not every guy is the right guy
Yes, this is what almost every single girl I know go through. I'm not saying that "True Love" doesn't exist in Secondary school days. If you were to think about it, more than 90% of the couples you know in Secondary school do not make it through Poly, or Junior College. Those that do, may not make it through University. Do not rush into "settling down" at such a young age, because you do not know what's ahead for you in life. Don't make plans that you are not even sure of. It just sounds so ridiculous remembering how I thought I would get married to this certain guy that I thought loved me. I was so devastated when we separated and it really took a toll on my academic results. IT WAS NEVER WORTH IT.
3. The BFF(best friends forever)s are made here
I know, I know.. This sounds contradicting because I just said that people come and go. Yes, people come and go, and those people that go are never worth your time and effort. However, there will be a certain group of people that will stay, and these people are your BFFs. With these people, it really doesn't matter if you are enrolling in different tertiary institutes or you no longer hang out with them everyday. These people are the ones that understand you the most, even when they are not there. So don't worry if you think you do not have any friends in Poly or JC. There's always a friend or two from Secondary School that will always be your friend.
4. Cherish every moment spent with anyone
You never know when you'll lose someone. It's destiny that you can't really make a difference to. Don't be one of those kid that regret not cherishing moments. Honestly, you never know when will your grand parents or anyone will leave one day. Do not be selfish. I know you want your own fun, but cherish the moments because you never know when you'll lose it.
5. Take as much pictures as possible
I was rather unsatisfied with my appearance when I was growing up, thus I took little to no pictures at all. I remember "falling sick" to skip picture day. Now, I totally regret it. Why? Because I do not have much pictures of my growing up process. It actually stuns my growth process because I do not have anything from before to compare with now. Pictures will not only show how your appearance has evolved, it will also capture special moments that you will never want to forget.

S.
